‘Building starting depth’ Toronto signs right-handed pitcher Jack Thompson… Trade with Chavez Young

‘Building starting depth’ Toronto signs right-handed pitcher Toronto acquired right-handed starting pitcher Jack Thompson (29) in a trade.

On the 11th (Korean time), the US ‘MLB.com’ said, “Right-handed pitcher Thompson transferred to the Toronto Blue Jays. He traded for outfielder Chavez Young.”

Thompson was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 2014 fifth round, 138th overall. Thompson, who did not step on the major league stage with the White Sox, signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins in November 2020. And he hit the big league stage for the first time in 2021. He went 3-7 with 75 innings and allowed 35 runs (27 earned) in 26 games (14 starts) with an earned run average of 3.24.

After one season in Miami, Thompson was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the season. He was primarily a starting pitcher in Pittsburgh. Thompson performed poorly with 3 wins, 10 losses, 121⅔ innings, 76 runs (70 ERA) and an average ERA of 5.18 in 29 games (22 starts).

‘MLB.com’ said, “Thompson should provide the Blue Jays with starting depth if needed. Toronto, which recently signed Drew Hutchison to a minor league contract, is starting to build to thicken the starting depth.”

Toronto built a starting 1-4 starting lineup, including Alec Manoa, Kevin Gaussman, Chris Baesik, and Jose Berrios. However, the 5th starting spot is still vacant. Yusei Kikuchi and Mitch White are likely to compete, and Thompson and Hutchinson could also be looking for the fifth starter spot.

Ryu Hyun-jin will return after the All-Star break. Ryu Hyun-jin underwent Tommy John surgery last season and is currently undergoing rehabilitation. At the time of his departure last month, Ryu Hyun-jin said, “I am rehabilitating as planned. If this continues, I will be able to mound after the All-Star break.” If Ryu Hyun-jin returns, the competition for the 5th starting pitcher is likely to intensify.

Meanwhile, ‘안전놀이터‘ said of Young, who was traded to Pittsburgh, “Young, who was loved throughout the speed, defense, and personality, spent the 2022 season in Triple A. He was once on the Blue Jays’ 30-man prospect list, but recently He was excluded from the 40-man roster.”Jack Thompson… Trade with Chavez Young
