“You guys signed me behind my back!”…PSG falls victim to suspicions of Real+Mbappe ‘underwater agreement’
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) suspect a deal has been struck between Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid.
“PSG believe Mbappe has concluded talks with Real over a free transfer next summer,” the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Monday (Aug. 8), adding that the club’s plans to desperately sell him this summer have hit a snag as it is unclear whether he will re-sign.
PSG have been at odds with Mbappe this summer. Mbappe, who has one year left on his contract, has informed the club that he will not be triggering the clause that allows him to extend it for another year. Mbappe, who is entering his final season with the club after one season in 2022/23, has an option for a one-year extension but informed PSG last month that he would not be exercising that clause.
PSG, who had planned to rebuild around Mbappe, were understandably furious. With Mbappe refusing to re-sign, the club will be forced to sell him this summer when they can get a transfer fee.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said at Luis Enrique’s press conference to announce his appointment that “Mbappe is not leaving on a free transfer. Mbappe will have to make a decision this week, in two weeks at the latest,” he said in a public display of anger.
“He already had a verbal agreement with us. I was very shocked when I found out he had decided to leave as a free agent. I am very disappointed because I thought he was a gentleman. There is no one greater than the team. Not the players and not me.”
However, Mbappe has taken Al Khelaifi’s comments in stride. According to France’s Foot Mercato, Mbappe will receive a loyalty bonus worth 90 million euros ($128 million) in September. He is in no position to force a move this summer.
Furthermore, as the Daily Mail claims, Mbappe already has an agreement with Real to join them on a free transfer next summer. If Mbappe refuses to leave, there’s nothing PSG can do about it.
